Punt Rd

The old Black Beauty chair, and a wall of guernseys keeping an eye on proceedings.
Our story
Frank started out in ladies’ hairdressing, trained as a barber in Bendigo, and in 1992 opened a shop of his own. He picked a barbershop over a salon because he liked the atmosphere, and he still does.
1929
Frank’s grandfather first came out to Cobram in 1929. The family has been here ever since.
1983
Frank started in the trade as a hairdresser cutting ladies’ hair, back when you had to be dual certified to cut men’s hair.
Bendigo
He did his barber training in Bendigo while still working in Cobram at his sister’s unisex salon on Punt Rd.
1992
Frank opened his own barbershop at 93B Punt Rd. Same address today, and the floorboards have the wear to prove it.
“You stick to what you know.”
The soapbox
Frank calls the barber’s chair the soapbox. Blokes sit down, relax, and talk about whatever’s going on, the good and the hard stuff, without any judgement. More often than not it comes back round to sport.
That’s why he chose a barbershop in the first place: men felt more relaxed and safe to talk their minds.
In the chair
No fuss and no gimmicks. Frank reckons without clippers the work would be slow and difficult, so they’re always close by, along with a good pair of scissors and plenty of time for a chat.

Particular about your beard? Good. So is the chair on Punt Rd.
“My style is very specific and other barbers have had trouble getting it right but he got it spot on!”

Footy, motorsport, the week that was. The walls are covered in guernseys and racing prints, and the conversation usually follows.
“I still enjoy the job, still enjoy the conversations and the banter.”

Grab a magazine and watch the main street go by while you wait. The shop sits right in the middle of town, across from the Woolworths precinct, so it’s easy to fit a cut in with the shopping.
Look for the red and white barber pole under the verandah.
